چکیده
Th e infl uence of the diff erent extracts of propolis and chlorhexidine on mutans streptococci and the development of dental caries in rats was examined in this study. Specifi cally, the antimicrobial eff ects of propolis extracts (including ethanol, methanol, chloroform, hexane, propylene glycol, and ethyl acetate) on Streptococcus mutans UA159 and Streptococcus sobrinus 6715 were studied. Minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration were determined using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards broth macrodilution method. In the animal study, the rats were infected with S. sobrinus and fed a cariogenic diet. Th ey were treated topically twice a day with both ethanol extract of propolis (EEP) and hexane extract of propolis (HEP) for 5 weeks. Aft er the experimental period, both the microbial composition of their dental plaque and their caries score were assessed. EEP and HEP showed the highest antimicrobial activity against the tested microorganisms. Th e chemical composition of EEP and HEP were examined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Th e pinobanksin and naringenin were the main phenolic compounds identifi ed in both extracts. Further, both of the extracts signifi cantly reduced the severity of smooth surface caries in vivo. Th e severity of the sulcal caries (Ds) was signifi cantly reduced by EEP compared to the control group (P < 0.05). In conclusion, poplar propolis demonstrated antimicrobial activity against mutans streptococci, indicating that it may be used in caries prevention.

The Antibacterial Effect of Ethanol Extract of Polish Propolis on Mutans Streptococci and Lactobacilli Isolated from Saliva
Dental caries occurrence is caused by the colonization of oral microorganisms and accumulation of extracellular polysaccharides synthesized by Streptococcus mutans with the synergistic influence of Lactobacillus spp. bacteria. The aim of this study was to determine ex vivo the antibacterial properties of ethanol extract of propolis (EEP), collected in Poland, against the main cariogenic bacteri...

Propolis has traditionally been used in curing infections and healing wounds and burns. Current researches have shown that propolis has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral actions however, the pharmacological activity of propolis is highly variable depending on its geographic origin. There have been few studies on the effects of Iranian propolis on the oral microorganisms. In this in-vitro ...

Recently, two chemically different types of Brazilian propolis (type-3 and -12) were shown to have cariostatic properties. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of their isolated fractions on mutans streptococci viability, glucosyltransferases (GTFs) activity and caries development in rats. The ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEPs) were serially fractionated into hexane (H-fr), chloroform,...

Dental caries is the most common chronic disease which involve the civilized humankind and is designated as the “disease of the civilization”. Oral Streptococci such as S. sanguis, S. salivarius and S. mutans have a very important role to play in the process of plaque formation. In order to inhibit and control caries process, the growth of such Streptococci must be reined. The purpose of this s...
